On the plateau of the Hautes Fagnes, firefighters are considering installing smart cameras to detect fires.
The Belgian public media is dedicating a report to the detection of forest fires using cameras and artificial intelligence. Several emergency response zones are studying the installation of a camera capable of distinguishing the smoke from a chimney from a real fire outbreak, and indicating the distance and direction — within a 20-kilometer radius.
Asked by RTBF, David Belin, director of Iristech (Perpignan), details the international experience of the technology: installations on four continents — Portugal, Germany, Chile, Colombia (Amazon forest), Ecuador — and a German statistic according to which the device has saved % 30 hectares of forest area burned per year.
